Normally, when people think of a classic Mustang, their eyes and hearts immediately sway to the fastback cars. Whether that’s because of the countless movies they’ve appeared in or because of their racing and performance heritage, fastback Mustangs are the typical poster child for many. But for the driver who is looking for something a little more understated, a bit more personal, and every bit as capable, the 1965-1966 Mustang Coupe deserves a spot in the limelight.

At Restomod Mustangs, the 1965-1966 Mustang coupe is not treated as a second choice or an afterthought. They are built with the same care as every other platform we build, from the ground up using an original coupe shell, then completely transformed into a bespoke performance war horse. Resulting in a Mustang that maintains its soul and the signature silhouette of the original while delivering the power, handling, braking, and craftsmanship expected from a high-end Restomod build.

Classic Looks Without Classic Limitations

The appeal of the early Mustang Coupe comes from its simplicity; however, that doesn't mean it goes untouched in our creation process. We take it one step further, sharpening every detail and perfecting the classic coupe shape.

Each coupe can be finished with professionally shaved and smoothed drip rails, a laser-straight, all-steel body, LED exterior lighting, custom wheels, and a host of exterior options that allow the owner to personalize the final look. For those of you who want a more aggressive look and feel, an optional widebody kit can be added to give the coupe a much wider and more aggressive stance.

This is part of the wide appeal of the coupe, its versatility. One buyer may want a clean, factory-inspired silhouette with subtle modern upgrades that allow it to be just as at home cruising as it would be sitting in traffic downtown. Another may want the encapsulation of performance, complete with fender flares, wide wheels, bold paint, and a stance that makes it destined for the next track day. The same shell, two different cars.

Power To Match Presence

We don’t just stop there; every Restomod Mustang requires the horsepower to back it up. Every 1965-66 Coupe from us comes standard with serious performance, including both classic and modern engine packages, ranging from a 550 horsepower-capable 427 stroker small block to a modern 5.0L coyote engine. These packages give every owner the personality a classic Mustang should have. Raw and responsive horsepower.

However, those are merely the standard options for the coupe. If you desire a little more flare, we offer supercharged and turbocharged packages that are capable of putting out well over 950 horsepower if the customer desires. Behind these powerplants, we offer both manual and automatic transmission options, allowing each car to be tuned exactly how it will be driven.

Modern Handling for a Classic Mustang Platform

While built to handle well for their day, anyone who has driven an untouched early Mustang knows factory suspension was never meant to handle modern performance expectations. That is where our Restomod Coupes become a completely different animal.

Gone is the antiquated shock tower front suspension, and in its place sits a modern-designed Mustang II-style front coil-over suspension with tubular control arms, upgraded sway bars, subframe connectors, and a fully adjustable 4-link coil-over rear suspension setup. Transforming the car from a vintage cruiser to a much more refined and modern feeling drive. Instead of hoping an old leaf spring Mustang will behave through a corner, our coupes are built to handle it.

These suspension setups give the car better road control, improved steering angles and feel, and a much stronger chassis response. Add the optional widebody and give the coupe the ability to run up to a 315-tire in the back, turning it into a serious, pro-touring platform capable of autocross, track days, mountain roads, or a spirited drive to the grocery store.

Braking Confidence to Match the Power

At the end of the day, any car build is only as good as the brakes that stop it. That’s why every Restomod Mustang comes equipped with 4-piston Wilwood calipers with drilled and slotted rotors at all four corners, giving the car the stopping power and pedal confidence needed to support the higher horsepower under the hood. For the driver who wants that stopping bite for the track, we also have Wilwood’s 6-piston calipers with drilled and slotted rotors to give the most stopping power possible.

If the buyer wants a little more comfort behind the wheel, electric power-assisted brakes are also available for your coupe to give the highest performance and comfort Restomod Mustangs can offer every time the brake pedal is pressed.

A classic Mustang with modern horsepower needs more than factory-style braking. It needs a system that can handle repeated stops, spirited driving, and real-world performance without making the driver second-guess the car.

A Bespoke Interior Built Around the Driver

The exterior and drivetrain seemingly get the majority of our time, but once it's in the hands of the new owner, the interior is where they’ll be experiencing the coupe. That is why every Restomod Mustang Coupe is reimagined as far as the new owner wants to go. Whether it's a take on a factory-style interior with modern finishes and gauges, or an entirely modern interior.

Each interior can be tailored through seat selection, color choice, gauge style, and overall layout. Every custom cabin features a shaved and smoothed dash, a custom French-stitched dash pad, Alcantara headliner and visors, a billet steering wheel and shifter, and premium components from names like Ringbrothers and Billet Specialties. Resulting in a cockpit that feels special before the key is turned.

Why Choose the Coupe?

The fastback may be the obvious icon, but that is exactly why the coupe is so appealing.

The 1965-66 Mustang Coupe is for the owner who wants early Mustang style with a little more individuality. It is still instantly recognizable. It still carries the classic pony car shape. It still has the same vintage charm and unmistakable road presence. But it doesn’t feel as expected.

That makes it a great choice for someone who wants a custom classic Mustang that stands apart from the usual crowd. The coupe can be clean and understated, bold and widebody, luxury-focused, track-inspired, or built somewhere in between.

It is one of the most versatile early Mustang platforms because it gives the owner room to shape the car around their personality.

For the driver who wants a classic Mustang restomod with timeless styling, serious performance, modern comfort, and a more individual look, the coupe makes a lot of sense.

At Restomod Mustangs, every build begins with that vision. We do not believe a Mustang should be built from a generic formula. It should be shaped around the owner, the body style, the driving experience, and the story the car is meant to tell.

Because the best Restomod Mustang is not simply the one with the most horsepower, the widest tires, or the most expensive materials.

It is the one that feels like yours.

This is such a fantastic breakdown of the 1965-1966 Ford Mustang Coupe as a restomod platform. I was particularly struck by your emphasis on starting small; it really resonates with how I approach my own creative projects. Often, the biggest hurdles are getting bogged down in trying to do too much at once https://www.monash.edu/ Learning to master a single element before moving on has been a game-changer for me, much like I imagine it is for someone tackling a classic car build. Seeing how much detail you've included here about the 1965-1966 Ford Mustang Coupe is truly impressive, a real knowledge drop indeed. It makes me wonder how much the approach to these specific builds has evolved since you first…
