From the depth of the paint to the power waiting under the hood, a finished restomod may capture attention from afar, but true craftsmanship is found in the details seen up close.
At Restomod Mustangs, we believe a great build is defined by the decisions that happen long before the car is finished. It starts with the foundation, continues through the engineering, and shows up in the fit, finish, drivability, and reliability of the final product. Taking time and effort to ensure every fiber of the car is right, even the ones that are invisible in the end. A real restomod is not just a classic Mustang with expensive parts bolted onto it. It is a complete machine in which every system has been designed to work together.
A Restomod Is More Than a Parts List

It is easy to look at a custom car and focus on the generic talking points such as how much horsepower it makes or what brake package is under the car. Those things matter, but they only begin to tell the full story of what a car actually is. A car is an extension of its owner's personality, and we work to design every car to fit their owner's desires.
A high-horsepower engine means very little if the chassis cannot handle it. Wide tires are only useful if the suspension is built to use them. A beautiful interior loses its impact if the wiring, fitment, and finish do not match the rest of the car. A great restomod has to feel complete, not like a collection of impressive parts that were cobbled together in a month.
That is why our process is built around the entire car. From the beginning, each Mustang is planned as a complete build with a clear purpose. The engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, steering, wheels, tires, interior, electronics, and exterior details are all discussed and engineered to complement one another.

The goal is not to build a car that only looks good under lights at the next major show. The goal is to build a Mustang that looks incredible, drives with confidence, and feels sorted every time the owner turns the key.
It Starts With the Right Foundation
These Mustangs that we build are now nearly 60 years old, which means the condition of the body and structure matters more than almost anything else. Before a car deserves modern horsepower and a nice paint job, the foundation has to be right.
At Restomod Mustangs, each build begins with careful attention to the original Mustang shell. The process is not simply about restoring what is there. It is about correcting every assembly line mistake, refining every line, and preparing the car for a completely different level of performance and finish.
Body alignment, panel fitment, structural integrity, and overall preparation all play a major role in the final product. A car can have the best engine package in the world, but if the body is not straight and the structure is not solid, the build will never feel right.
That foundation-first approach is what allows the rest of the car to come together
properly. Paint looks better when the panels are right. Suspension works better when the chassis is straight and solid. The interior feels more refined when the cabin has been properly prepared. Every major detail depends on the work that happens underneath.
Built Around the Owner’s Vision

As we alluded to before, each car is built around the owner’s vision, and that means no two Mustangs will ever be built the same way. Some want a refined cruiser they can enjoy on weekends and long drives. Others want a pro-touring fastback built for mountain roads, autocross events, and aggressive driving. Some want a widebody car with serious grip and modern attitude, while others want a big-power Boss-inspired build that delivers an unmistakable presence at every show they attend.
The build process is not about forcing every customer into one formula. It is about understanding how the car will be used, what kind of personality the owner wants, and how the final product should feel. That vision influences everything from engine choice and transmission setup to suspension level, wheel fitment, interior style, technology, and final finish.

A 427 stroker small block creates a different experience than a Gen 3 Coyote. A manual transmission gives the car a different personality than an automatic. A widebody tire package changes more than the look; it changes how the car handles, grips, and responds. The options can go on and on, and every choice matters, because every choice changes the final car.
Every Build Starts With Bodywork

Depending on the model and build, that attention can include laser-straight bodywork, professionally shaved and smoothed drip rails, fully molded fender flares, LED exterior lighting, custom wheel fitment, and subtle details that modernize the car without taking away its original identity.
The best restomods do not look like a random collection of parts. The body lines, stance, wheels, lighting, trim, and paint all need to feel connected. Whether the car is a clean 1965-66 Coupe, a widebody Fastback, a GT500 Tribute, or a Boss 429-inspired build, the exterior should look like it was designed as one complete package. That is where attention to detail makes the difference. The car should not just look modified. It should look finished.
Modern Power Requires Modern Control
Modern power requires modern control. Classic Mustangs have always had style, but the original suspension was never designed to handle the kind of horsepower, grip, and speed expected from a modern performance car. That is why suspension and handling are central to the Restomod Mustang build process.

Many of our builds use a Mustang II-style front coilover suspension with tubular control arms, upgraded sway bars, subframe connectors, and a full 4-link coilover rear suspension. This transforms the way the car behaves on the road. Instead of feeling vague, loose, or unpredictable, the car becomes more planted, more responsive, and more confident.

On select builds, such as the Boss 429 Tribute, the foundation can move even further with a full Roadster Shop chassis, modern coilovers, rack-and-pinion steering, increased track width, and a more advanced performance structure.
Braking is treated with the same importance. Wilwood brakes give the cars the stopping confidence needed to match the powertrain and suspension. For more serious drivers, upgraded brake packages and pro-touring options help push the car even further.
A properly built restomod should not only accelerate harder than the original. It should stop better, corner better, steer better, and inspire confidence from behind the wheel.
Choosing the Mustang's New Heart: The Powertrain
The engine is one of the most emotional parts of any Mustang build. The choice of powertrain decides a majority of how the car will feel, handle, and give the Mustang its true character.

A 427 stroker small block delivers old-school Ford character with serious modern power. It has the sound, throttle feel, and attitude many owners expect from a classic Mustang. A Gen 3 Coyote brings a more modern performance experience, with smooth drivability, fuel injection, and the confidence of contemporary Ford engineering.
For owners who want even more, supercharged Coyote and twin-turbo 427 combinations can push the platform into serious high-performance territory. Boss-inspired builds can take a different path entirely, using big-block power to create a more commanding muscle car experience.

The point is not simply to chase the highest horsepower number. The point is to match the engine to the car and the owner. A refined cruiser, a canyon carver, a track-focused widebody, and a runway monster should not all feel the same. Each built beyond what the owner had ever dreamt of.
Modern Wiring and Technology Infused Into Every Build

Wiring and technology are an aspect of every car that nobody pays attention to until it fails. Meaning that if the builder did his job, it will render a quality job invisible.
A clean, reliable electrical system may not be the first thing someone points out at a show, but it affects nearly every part of the ownership experience. Starting, charging, lighting, audio, ignition, gauges, and overall reliability all depend on wiring that is done correctly.
That is why Restomod Mustangs use modern electrical components such as American Autowire harnesses, MSD ignition, LED headlights, sequential LED taillights, and modern audio systems. These upgrades help bring classic Mustangs into the modern world without taking away from their vintage character.

Inside, features like JL Audio systems, touchscreen head units, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto make the cars easier to enjoy on real drives. The goal is not to bury the classic Mustang experience under unnecessary technology. It is to add the right modern features in a way that feels clean, useful, and properly integrated.
Bespoke Interior Craftsmanship

The interior is where the owner connects with the car every time they drive it. That is why the cabin cannot feel like an afterthought. At Restomod Mustangs, the interior is fully reimagined around the owner’s preferences, from seat selection and color choice to gauge style, materials, stitching, and final layout.
A proper bespoke interior does more than replace old vinyl with new leather. It changes the entire experience of the car. Shaved and smoothed dashboards, custom French-stitched dash pads, Alcantara headliners and visors, billet steering wheels, billet shifters, premium components, and carefully integrated audio systems all work together to create a cockpit that feels worthy of the rest of the build.

Some owners want a more aggressive, track-inspired interior. Others want something refined and comfortable for long drives. The best interior is not simply the most expensive one. It is the one that matches the car’s purpose and the owner’s vision.
Quality Aftermarket Parts Woven Into Every Car

High-end parts matter, but they do not automatically create a high-end car. Wilwood, Tremec, Detroit Speed, Roadster Shop, Ringbrothers, Billet Specialties, JL Audio, American Autowire, and other premium names all have a place in a serious build. But the parts are only one side of the equation. Fitment, installation, planning, tuning, finishing, and final sorting are what turn those components into a complete car.

That is where many builds fall short. A great custom car should not feel like a collection of upgrades. It should feel like one finished machine. The parts should work together, the systems should support each other, and the final product should feel natural from the driver’s seat. That level of execution is what separates a true restomod from a classic Mustang with modern parts.
Built to Feel Complete
The final stage of any build is where the details come together. Panel gaps, ride height, wheel clearance, brake feel, steering response, drivability, electrical function, interior fitment, cooling, power delivery, and road manners all matter. This is the part of the process that determines whether a car simply looks finished or actually feels finished.
At Restomod Mustangs, the goal is to build cars that feel complete in every sense. The exterior should have presence. The interior should feel personal. The powertrain should match the owner’s goals. The suspension and brakes should give the driver confidence. The technology should work cleanly. The entire car should feel like it was built with one clear vision from the beginning.

That is what makes a Restomod Mustang different. It is not just paint. It is not just horsepower. It is not just leather, wheels, or a spec sheet. It is the process, the planning, the craftsmanship, and the attention to detail that turn a classic Mustang into something far greater than the sum of its parts. Classic looks. Modern performance. Built with purpose.
