The design of the 1960’s Ford Mustangs is truly an American icon. From the fastback roofline to the signature taillights, it all combines to create a pony car every enthusiast can appreciate today. However, one piece that simply hasn’t stood up to the test of time regarding these early Mustangs is their chassis and suspension. While they may have been adequate for their time, they don’t hold up to modern performance expectations.

Why Factory Mustang Suspension Needs to Change



Original 1960s Mustangs were built for a different world. They were designed during an era when tire technology, road speeds, chassis engineering, braking expectations, and driver demands were completely different. A time when a 225/70 R14 “F70” was a higher-end tire.  A stock classic Mustang can still be enjoyable, but compared to a modern performance car, the original suspension leaves a lot on the table.


Factory-style setups can feel soft and unpredictable when pushed hard. Old steering systems, worn bushings, leaf-spring rear suspension, small brakes, and narrow tires can make the car feel sketchy when cornering, braking, or putting serious power to the ground. For a lightly restored cruiser, that may be acceptable. For a Restomod Mustang built with 500 to over 1,000 horsepower, modern tires, and serious performance potential, it is not enough.

The suspension has to be designed around how the car will actually be driven. Whether the owner wants a canyon carver, a weekend cruiser, an autocross-capable street car, a track-inspired build, or a high-horsepower statement piece, the chassis has to support the power.

Mustang II-Style Front Coilover Suspension




Across many Restomod Mustang builds, one of the key upgrades is a Mustang II-style front coilover suspension system. This is a major change from the factory-style front suspension found in an original classic Mustang. The goal is to improve steering feel, suspension control, ride quality, wheel fitment, and overall handling response. By moving to a modern coilover setup with tubular control arms, the front end becomes far more precise and tunable.

The tubular control arms help modernize the suspension geometry, while the coilovers allow the car to sit properly, ride better, and respond more consistently. Instead of relying on the very outdated shock tower design that practically uses sheet metal as part of the front suspension.

Coilovers: More Control, Better Stance, Better Response

Coilover suspension is one of the biggest changes in the way these cars feel. A coilover setup combines the spring and shock into a more compact and controlled package, giving the suspension better response and adjustability compared to the original design. For a restomod build, that is important because the car needs to do more than sit low and look good.


Coilovers allow the car to achieve a more aggressive stance while still maintaining suspension travel, control, and road manners. When paired with the right spring rates, shocks, sway bars, and tire package, the car becomes far more planted than a conventional classic Mustang. Completely changing the driving experience of the car, allowing for better steering control, less roll, and more confidence at speed.


Upgraded Sway Bars and Better Body Control

Sway bars play a major role in how a car feels during cornering. On a classic Mustang, body roll can be one of the biggest things that makes the car feel old. Nobody wants their classic Mustang to feel like they are laying door handles on the ground going around corners. Subframe Connectors and Chassis Rigidity



Power and grip both put stress on the chassis. That is why subframe connectors are such an important part of many Restomod Mustang builds. Classic Mustangs were not originally built with the same rigidity as modern performance cars, and when you add modern horsepower, sticky tires, and upgraded suspension, the car needs more support underneath to prevent potential structural issues.



Subframe connectors help tie the structure together and reduce unwanted chassis flex and essentially make the Mustang a full-frame car. That improved rigidity makes the suspension more effective because the chassis is no longer absorbing as much of the load. Instead of the body twisting and moving around the suspension, the suspension can do its job more consistently.


The result is a car that feels tighter, more responsive, and more predictable. This is especially important on high-performance builds, widebody cars, convertibles, and cars designed for aggressive street driving or track use. A rigid foundation makes every other handling upgrade work better.


The 4-Link Coilover Rear Suspension


The rear suspension is just as important as the front. Original classic Mustangs used leaf springs, which worked for the era but are not ideal for a modern restomod build with serious power and grip. Restomod Mustangs replace that antiquated setup with a full 4-link coilover rear suspension on many of its models. This is one of the biggest upgrades in the way the car behaves.


A 4-link rear suspension helps control axle movement, improve traction, and give the car a more composed feel under acceleration, braking, and cornering. Paired with coilovers, it allows the rear of the car to respond more predictably and gives the driver more confidence when putting power down. That matters because these cars are not mild factory cruisers.

Many Restomod Mustang builds are making serious horsepower, and the rear suspension has to manage that power. A composed 4-link rear allows the car to feel more planted and controlled instead of loose, nervous, or unpredictable. This is where the Mustang starts to feel like a true modern performance car instead of a vintage platform. 


Rack-and-Pinion Steering and Modern Steering Feel


Steering feel is another major part of how a restomod behaves. Some Restomod Mustang builds, especially the Boss 429 Tribute with its Roadster Shop chassis, incorporate rack-and-pinion steering to bring the car into the modern era. Compared to older steering systems, rack-and-pinion steering can provide a cleaner, more direct, and more predictable steering feel. That helps the car feel more connected to the driver.



When a Mustang has modern power, wider tires, upgraded suspension, and better brakes, vague steering can hold the entire experience back. Rack-and-pinion steering helps make the car feel sharper and easier to place on the road.

For owners who want an even higher level of braking performance, the Ultimate Pro-Touring Track Pack includes Wilwood 6-piston calipers with drilled and slotted rotors. That setup is aimed at more serious driving, where repeated braking performance, heat management, and stronger bite become crucial. 


Wheels and Tires: The Contact Patch That Changes Everything

You can have the best suspension in the world, but if the tires don’t hold, none of it matters. 

That is why wheel and tire fitment is so important on a Restomod Mustang. Wider tires, better compounds, and proper fitment can completely change the way a car accelerates, corners, and brakes. 


Restomod Mustangs offer several wheel and tire combinations depending on model and build direction. On certain widebody platforms, the cars can fit up to a 315 tire at all four corners. Some setups use 18-inch wheels with 315/30R18 tires, while others can use 19-inch wheels with 295/30R19 tires. Custom-designed 3-piece wheels from MV Forged are also available for buyers who want a more personalized look. 



This is where stance and performance meet. The widebody fenders are not just visual. They create room for more tire, and more tire means more mechanical grip. That mechanical grip is what allows these cars to feel planted during acceleration, braking, and cornering. A widebody Mustang looks more aggressive.
